A Ray of Hope
is the true story of a family that has gone through the agony of sexual abuse. It is a
story that is told in alternating sections written by "Allan" and "Mary" as they struggled
with the very real impacts of sexual abuse on them as individuals, as a couple, as a
family and as members of their community. A Ray of Hope provides a frank account
of sexual abuse from it's beginnings, through the transition from being abused to
becoming an abuser, the agony of arrest and imprisonment, and the long and
difficult path to freedom and redemption. The names of people and locations within
the story have been altered to protect the dignity of those involved.
The book was originally written as part of the journaling and counseling process that
Allan and Mary went through. There was little thought given to publishing it - their
hope was that it would be simply a part of their healing. As events have unfolded
over the past several years, and as sexual abuse, particularly that which is initiated
by trusted authorities such as priests, pastors, teachers and other leaders has
become more widely recognized, Allan and Mary have been encouraged to share
their story as A Ray of Hope to others. It is a story that reveals and balances the
extremes of shame and despair with the exhilaration and joy that came as together
they sought and found spiritual transformation. A Ray of Hope is an inspiring
witness to the healing that can come as we face the deepest and darkest parts of
our lives, and courageously take responsibility to pursue healing and wholeness in
spirit, mind and body.

A Ray of Hope
We have been through the process of working through sexual addiction, and have tremendous compassion for
those who are going through the process. It is an intensely personal, and at times intensely public process.
